The handhole is typically sized for hand access only, which makes it suitable for compact vessels or areas where full human entry is not possible or needed.The main purpose of a pressure vessel handhole is to allow operators and maintenance personnel to inspect internal surfaces, remove deposits, check for corrosion, and perform routine servicing. Because pressure vessels operate under high pressure and often at elevated temperatures, internal conditions can lead to scaling, residue buildup, pitting, erosion, or other forms of wear. A handhole provides a practical inspection point without requiring dismantling of the entire vessel. This helps reduce downtime and supports safer operation.A typical handhole assembly includes a handhole cover, gasket, studs or bolts, nuts, and a seating surface that ensures a tight seal. The cover is usually made from strong materials such as carbon steel, stainless steel, or alloy steel, depending on the vessel’s operating environment. The gasket material must withstand pressure, temperature, and the chemical properties of the contents inside the vessel. Proper sealing is essential because any leakage could compromise system performance and create safety hazards.Pressure vessel handholes are designed according to engineering standards and codes to ensure structural integrity and safe operation. The design must consider internal pressure, thermal stress, mechanical loading, and corrosion allowance. The opening itself weakens the vessel wall, so reinforcement may be required around the handhole area. The cover and fasteners must also be able to handle repeated opening and closing without losing sealing performance.In use, a handhole is opened only when the vessel has been safely depressurized, cooled, and isolated from the process system. Before opening, workers must follow strict safety procedures, including verifying zero pressure, checking for hazardous residues, and using proper protective equipment. After inspection or cleaning, the cover is reinstalled and tightened to the specified torque to restore a reliable seal.Pressure vessel handholes are valued for their simplicity, durability, and convenience.
